DESCRIPTION:Hellweg Konkret III \n3D. Contemporary Explorations in Concrete Sculpture \nThe exhibition\, curated together with Cologne-based artist Ivo Ringe\, focuses on the present and future of plastic arts from the “concrete” section. It traces promising current trends in the work of international artists who are continuing and breathing new life into the “Art Concrete” movement\, which began around one hundred years ago. \nThey explore the fundamentals of the sculptural genre – such as space\, form\, weight\, gravity\, tension\, balance – and the principles of concrete art: even if these works rely on the primacy of nonobjectivity that was established at the beginning of the 20th century\, references to reality are now conceivable. The still reduced formal language goes far beyond geometric bodies such as cubes\, cuboids and spheres – also thanks to the openness to new materials with new possibilities. Techniques introduced by the ancestors such as moulding\, folding or assemblage are developed further. Movement\, change and dynamics – whether in the creative process or as potential – are central themes. \nExtraordinary technical and aesthetic quality and stringently conceived concepts\, occasionally presented with a certain sense of humour\, come together in the works on display – a refreshing experience for the mind and senses. \n\n3D is part of the exhibition series Hellweg Konkret III. For the third time\, cultural institutions from the „Hellweg“ region are joining forces to showcase concrete art in ten exhibitions from spring 2024 to autumn 2025.
