The artist studied at the École du Louvre and was confronted with cubism (André Lhote) and constructivism (Fernand Léger) early during her studies. Nemours‘ work is consistently abstract and characterized by the juxtaposition of black and white in a geometric way. As awardee of the „Grand Prix de la Peinture“ (1994), the Centre Pompidou showed a major retrospective („rythme-nombre-couleur“ 2004). Aurélie Nemours is one of the very early artists, steadily focussed on concrete art, whereby her work was only truly appreciated by museums and collectors with the rediscovery of the perception of concrete art.
In the work belonging to SAMMLUNG SCHROTH, the artist places four quadratic colour surfaces against one another, but gives no instructions in what order they should be hung, leaving it up to the curator to decide individually; depending on the location, light and other surroundings. This course of action is also traditional amongst other concrete artists, who grant freedom and influence to coincidence or location. One believes that concrete artists, attached to strict forms and rules, should be strict with their works and how they are handled. However, the collector has been able to identify a liberality and humour these artists often embody when their works are handled.
